Lake District Tree of Light – Presentation of Cheques.

Keswick Rotary Club distributed £5,500 on Thursday to the beneficiaries of its Lake District Tree of Light. This took place after an excellent lunch at the club’s regular meeting place, the Skiddaw Hotel.

The main charity to benefit this year was Macmillan Cancer Support with significant donations also being made to Keswick Junior Football and Keswick Junior Cricket.
Also to benefit is the Keswick Drop-in Centre as part of the money raised is to be used to take a party of 30 members of the centre to Keswick Amateur Operatic Society’s performance of Singing in the Rain at the Theatre in the Lake on 29th April 2014. This has been made possible by the generosity of Davies Taxis who have kindly offered to provide transport to and from the Theatre for the 30 members.
Donations were also made to the four schools that created the fabulous mythical creatures that took part in the ‘Shine’ procession when the Tree of Light and the town’s festive lights were switched on in early November. The schools were Borrowdale, Braithwaite, Threlkeld and St Herbert’s.

Rotarian Doug Lowther, chairman of the Tree of Light appeal said ‘It has been another excellent year for the Lake District Tree of Light which was again lit with over 5000 lights over the Christmas period. Not only was the tree a wonderful feature in the town but through the generous donations of the public and local businesses it has raised £5,500 which has enabled us to make these donations today’.

Macmillan Cancer Support will use the money to help them to continue with the support that they give to the residents of Cumbria. Keswick Cricket Club will use the money to help replace the all weather practice pitch that is mainly used by the young cricketers whilst the Football Club will use the money towards the cost of running their junior teams.

The Tree of Light is situated behind the war memorial in Penrith Road and is lit each year alongside Keswick’s Christmas Lights display.
