The Keswick Rotary club approached the Pencil Museum to help them run a drawing competition for local primary school children in aid of supporting the Keswick Rotary Tree of Light. The competition consisted of drawing a tree of light, at Christmas in Keswick.

Alex Farthing Pencil Museum manager commented, "We received 80 drawings in all from 4 of our local primary schools, Bassenthwaite, Borrowdale, Braithwaite and Threlkeld. The standards of the drawings were wonderful. The children had really thought hard about what they wanted to include in their drawings and each one was beautifully different. It made judging very hard."

Judging was held in the parish chambers, in Keswick, and members of the Rotary, along with the Lady Mayoress and Kay Curzon a member of the Pencil Museum team, made up the panel of judges.

The overall winner was Max Pickering aged 10 from Bassenthwaite School. He was presented with his prize, on stage at the Cenotaph, on Penrith Road, last Friday evening, alongside the 3 Olympic touch bearers from Keswick, the Keswick Rotary President Peter Campion and Andrew Lysser Keswick’s Mayor. Max won a 72 wooden box set of Derwent watercolour pencils and some watercolour accessories.

The second prize went to Johnny Dennison, aged 5 from Threlkeld School and third prize was won by Laura Jane Donoghue-Weir, aged 4 from Borrowdale School. Their prizes were presented to them at the Pencil Museum by the Keswick Rotary President Peter Campion.

All of the pictures will be on display at the Pencil Museum, in the children’s gallery from Saturday 10th November until Saturday .January
